Through the Empty Glass Premiere

So, we had the premiere of my stage play yesterday, and it was a blast. The audience was laughing, the actors were stellar and I had no problem whatsoever standing on the stage and take in the applause.
That means I can go in much more relaxed on Friday and today, of course. I can enjoy the performances more, and I can take a closer look on the audience and see what works and what not. It was a great evening for me, and I got a reaffirmation why I want to do this kind of stuff.

Return of the Lazy

Wow, I just realized that I haven't been updating in ages. Fuck. Well, to remedy that I'll run you down the stuff I've been up to the last few months:
First off, my stage play "Through the empty Glass". As the title suggests it's an adaptation of a Lewis Carrol thing, and it's written specifically for the group performing, in my native language German. They had a blast doing it, and I was pretty amazed to see what they made of it at the final rehearsal yesterday. The premiere is tonight, so my brain is pretty occupied with that stuff.
The second thing is that I'm blogging for a German Mac-blog. I'm doing the weekly news-updates and compiling a database of all Macintoshs of the past. It's not the most glamorous thing in the world, but it pays some money.
I have some good stuff on the actual writing front as well, my first novella is reaching it's conclusion. I have to go over it one or two more times before I can decide what to do with it. I feel that it's a pretty strong idea and I can't wait for other people to see it. Comic-wise, I'm doing a small eight page story for someone I found on DW that should be done by tomorrow.

And that's about it for the moment. I try to update more frequently in the future, and hope that someone somewhere had a good three seconds reading this. Until then.

Dr. Horrible's failure

So, here I go again.
Here's my problem: There was a man and and a lot of other man and women who were unsatisfied with the way things were. Evil people controlled their content and left them without proper compensation. They went on strike, (kinda) won and now everything's good again. (Sounds familiar? Well, it's half "borrowed" from Dr. Horrible's homepage. Sorry, Joss)
Well, not really, but hey. So, while this was going on, the man I was speaking of (you know, the one that I singled out in the beginning?), wrote a musical for the internets. Which is great. The first two acts are pure fun and I don't even like musicals that much. My favorite musical is "Once More with Feeling" by the same guy. Maybe I just like Joss Whedon. His writing.
So yeah, that's great. The thing was going to revolutionize the content business (or so I hoped) but instead proved again what is broken with the system.
Joss Whedon's idea was brilliant, generous and true. You give people content they want, they'll pay for it eventually. No restrictions, no fucking around.
Enter hulu.com! For the first couple hours it wasn't possible to watch the first act in any other place than the U.S. WTF? Again, the Internet is (emphasize)NOT a geo-dependent thing!! I should be able to see the same content, no matter where I am.
They rectified it pretty quickly, so that's okay.
But hey, if we got one way to fuck you up, there is surely another, right?
Enter iTunes. I love iTunes. I'm a Machead. And I know that this has nothing to do with Apple (or so I hope) but it sucks.
Why, dear ContentProviders (capital letters for, again, emphasize), is it not possible for you to accept that people all over the world are willing to give you money for your goods? And that you could make so much money if you'd just let Apple, Amazon and whathaveyou sell the same content to every person connected to those services? I WANT to give you money, goddamit! Are you deaf? Dr. Horrible is of course not in the German iTunes Store.
And so the old media fuck us up. Again.

Sorry, that I return with a rant, but I really needed to get that off my chest. Joss, your musical is brilliant. Your idea to distribute outside the studiosystem is brave and the right thing to do. Let's hope the industry will catch up to people like you.

P.S. Everybody: watchteguild.com for more Felicia Day goodness.

Adobe Buzzword

I gotta admit, I love Pages, the wordprocessor designed by Apple. It's a lean and easy to use alternative to Microsoft Office, not to mention the price difference.
I also like Desktop applications. Most of the time I'm working alone on a document and unfortunately, my Internet connection dies a lot these days.

All those things considered, I would argue that I'm not the kind of costumer Adobe had in mind when they designed Buzzword.
But I have to admit, after playing with it for an extensible amount of time (7 minutes), it's frikkin' awesome!

The interface is, not unlike Pages, never in the way of editing. The dark background helps me to stay focused when I'm writing something, like this very Blog-post.
There aren't that many features implemented yet and just a handful of Fonts to choose from (being a beta and all), but one can see where they're going with it. And since this is a web-based application, it's dead-simple to get updates for the thing. (Hint: you just start the editor as usual).
I will keep using it for the next couple days, just to get a feeling for it and then come back and write a full review. (Wait, did I just said that? Dammit.)

But what I really wanted to say was:

Go ahead! Try out the future of wordprocessing for yourself!

A "I'm still here, so don't bother going away" note

It's been kinda quite around here, in fact as I logged in I was greeted with "last posted: 22 April"...That's over a moth!

What can I say, I was busy. Busy with actually doing something. As I mentioned, I took part in the ScriptFrenzy '08. I won. Which basically means, I can finish a script on a deadline. Kinda proud on that one. More importantly for me though, is the fact that this was my very first finished script. Yes, I had never done anything like it before. Kinda bad for a self-proclaimed writer, i guess...
Nonetheless, since then I've been pounding out material. I finished another script, started two new and feel more productive than ever. With that and the two jobs I have now, plus the girlfriend and the social life that's materializing in front of me, blogging kinda went downhill. So I'm sorry. It won't happen again. Hopefully. If so, just shoot me a note on twitter. All two of you.

He (finally) turned to the Dark Side!

Disclaimer: This post is written directly after watching the episode and is mostly a composition of thoughts. It might and probably will get changed on a later date.

“How does a son murder his own father?”
“Total absence of love. Some say that’s the very definition of evil.”

When I heard those lines and thought about their consequences, it really hit me deep. Lex has turned for good. There is no way for him to come back. And even though we knew that would happen sooner or later; and even though I wanted that to happen, it still is a hard pill to swallow when this guy can be so charming, so friendly even.
But that is long gone. And that's the beauty of TV: We can have a really long arc and explore characters so deep, that we care about them.
He tried. I can't blame him. He tried so hard to be a better person, but his upbringing, his desire for control denied him that.
And finally we saw his inner struggle visualized in the fight with his little self. It's heartbreaking. We see them arguing, we see Lex killing the very rest of his soul. It's gone.

I'd like to see the show end now. End it or put Clark in the suit and call it Superman. Everything else would be stupid. And dishonest. Lex' path is done. He has become the person he needs to be. Clark's journey might not be over yet, but it's so close that we can call it a night. Seriously. Go in dignity, Smallville.
